People often ask ..“What’s the difference between a Patio and a Pergola?”
The residential design codes advise:
Patio: An unenclosed structure covered in a water impermeable material or , which may or may not be attached to a dwelling.
Pergola: An unenclosed open-framed structure covered in a water permeable material or unroofed which may or may not be attached to a dwelling.
So in short the difference between the two is basically you could say..
A Patio has a waterproof roof:
And a Pergola does not:
A Pergola may have shadecloth , battens, or perhaps a vine growing over it for example, thus allowing water to permeate through. Whereas your Patio has an “im”permeable roof such as colourbond, polycarbonate, tiles etc anything that creates a waterproof cover.
