After the near completion of building a deck and screen for the owners…
…the question arose, over tea and scones,
“WHAT COULD WE PUT ‘HERE’ ?
…FOR THE KIDS “
” Here” was the usable space of around 3.6×2.0 meters including a tree taking up the corner area of the fence. (just enough room for a small slide we surmised)
The 2 children were brother and sister and had a relatively small space to play with. So the end decision was we’d put an elevated Cubby in for them.
After further consultations with brother & sister we arrived at the following:
Sisters Brief :
” We would like to be able to be in the cubby at the same times with our friends and at separate times as well.
If I/we need to get away from my brother and his mates we’ll need a quick exit strategy like a slide for me and my gal pals and the boys can have a firemans pole…
…as you will be aware it’s everyone for themselves if they…. or we all go crazy….
….especially all at the same times! ….
…and so perhaps put a climbing frame in right next to the ladder.
There should be some windows we can open as well … and to go with the door….
……there will be a door won’t there?
I’d like a lock on the door too please to keep my brother out should the need arise.
Perhaps a sliding window on the side because we don’t want it to interfere with anyone racing through trying to make a quick getaway on the slide now do we?…
… and please could we have a right hand side hinged window on the front verandah that can open right out… and yes high enough so that if my brother farts we have an emergency exit as well as the door…pleeeeeze?…
…and a matching fleur-de-lis on the verandah beam to tie it in with the existing house.
We would love a sandpit underneath also and if you could seal that section off through the middle and on the other side, to keep Mum n Dad happy, we can store all our toys and pool stuff.
So if you could seal that off as well and put a door on that too please that would be great.
My brother sooooo thinks he’s a pirate, like Jack Sparrow …so umm yea better put a flag pole in there somewhere.
He can hoist his ‘Jolly Roger’ but please can we have the Aussie flag up for the house warming when it’s built thanks.”
Brothers Brief: ” Just put some handrails on it so we don’t fall off.”

Set up of deck and basic framework
In my considered opinion this is some of the best carpentry work I have ever encountered – and a beautifully written account, Nick.
