A pine decking built in 1995 was in need of repairs…
…and some of those places to be repaired were unseen ie: below deck.
In the end it was decided to remove all the old pine ‘softwood’ deck and replace with a more durable ‘ hardwood’ deck in a wider board ie: Merbau.(140×19)
Pulling up the old deck revealed some undesirable building practices eg: blocks of wood on the end of joists to carry the last piece of decking ,propped up by bricks.
Some joists not fixed adequately to the bearers and bearers over spanned.

Blocks of wood on the end of joists to carry the last piece of decking

This was the last “piece” to be taken out on the job. We jokingly suggested it be left in as a hidden treasure, hidden under the smallest handrail and would become a talking point if one talked or mentioned it at all.. Images of yee olde pubs and collectables and words like artisan , rustic and authenticity came to mind….albeit briefly 🙂
